Well it is a little late, in fact it’s just gone 4am. You see, the problem with having some time off is that there is so much to catch up on when you come back you end up burning the candle and feeling like you never had a holiday to start with.  It’s not that I went away or anything, I literally just pressed the stop button for a few days and it was heavenly.  Towards the end though I found myself with a pesky cold and the Newsletter and Quiz started to loom over me a bit so I decided to do a little bit.  That was it then, I clicked back into work mode.  Good grief am I gonna be cutting it fine this month.  Normally when I go away or have time off I am quite organised, I work doubly hard before I go to make sure everything is up to date and a little more so I don’t have to run around like a loony when I get back. This time, I didn’t get it together enough to get in front and YES! you’ve guessed it – I’m running around like a loony.  Let me tell you a little about what I’ve been up to….

Yesterday I spent most of the day designing the poster for BRICKFEST 2011. There are 36 bands to include, logos from both JACK DANIELS (who are kindly sponsoring the B2 Stage), Norfolk Road Saftey – HUGGER LOGO (who are getting behind BRICKFEST 2011 this year with their road safety campaign) and our two chosen charities ‘Great Ormand Street Hospital’ and ‘Magdalen Gates Primary School’. That’s a lot of info on one poster, however I finally finished it and it looks pretty good albeit a little full up.  The poster had to be my starting point as I need to include it in July’s edition of the newsletter which I am currently working on. I need to get that finished and sent off by Tuesday at the latest. 12 pages to design and I’ve completed the grand total of 3! lol… I’m not too worried though, I have dedicated the whole day and night to it tomorrow until it is finished. When that is done I then have just over a week to finish July’s Quiz and begin the PR for BRICKFEST. From the start of July we will start sending out our press releases to promote the event to all local and some specific national medias. It’s quite a job, but one that is vital to the success of the event. I have to then get our BRICKFEST programme designed and sent off to print as well as getting artwork completed and sent off for wristbands and all special merchandise for the day. It’s going to be so cool, in fact this is going to be HUGE!  We are all very excited, there is just a lot of work to be done in the run up to the day.

As most of you know, on our charity days, we, as in The Brickies staff team choose a theme and all dress in fancy dress, we like to get in the spirit of things, our last one had a theme of Emergency services as it was in aid of The Air Ambulance.  Several people made comments on the day that had they have known, they would have made the effort and joined in with our costume theme. So to save any disappointment, we are going to tell you what our theme is for BRICKFEST 2011. If you are brave, if you are strong enough to stand the giggles, the torment, the heat and pure humiliation then keep your eyes on our Facebook page…. within the week we will be announcing our BRICKFEST fancy dress theme. Seriously, it’s all for charity so if you feel like you would like to join in with us then we would be delighted to not be the only ones that look silly!

Right folks, it’s heading towards 4.30am and I need to up and about in 7 hours ready to open up for a new week. I had better try to go and get a little shut-eye.

more waffle to follow I’m sure!

Goodnight Narrrrrich

Hey! I know I know I know, its been ages since I’ve blogged and to be honest I didn’t realise that so many people read my random waffle but it seems, I do have readers and you’ve been waiting patiently, so here it is folks. A new post! I have a lot to tell you, it’s been a busy time. With five bank holidays in just over one month we weren’t too sure of how busy we would be on our May Bash, but as always we needn’t have worried. You guys were there with us all the way. The sun kept it’s promise and although we had a little quieter start than usual, by 3pm we had almost 400 people through the doors and everyone was in the mood. The day was filled with amazing bands and our staff even got in the spirit of things by dressing up in themed fancy dress – Emergency services! check out the photos – we were definitely given top marks for effort on this one, however I did have to change by the time the evening came, there’s only so much running around you can do in fishnets – it was becoming dangerous! When the rain finally decided to set in it was a decent hour and everyone headed inside for the evening bands, and I have to say we had a great time! The last band on was fondly changed to ‘The Passion Hounds’, a delightful mix of two-thirds of ‘The Floating Greyhounds’ and…… Me!  When Butty first mentioned to me that they probably couldn’t do this Bank Holiday we had a small panic thinking we had no time to find a replacement band, however having played with the band for some time almost 10 years ago we thought that it would be fun for me to fill in for Brendan and fun it certainly was! luckily we all had a pretty good sense of humour and took it in our stride. It was for charity after all. Speaking of charity, this one was in aid of East Anglian Air Ambulance, something that we all take for granted at times. The government do not give these guys any funding whatsoever, they rely solely on charity. It is a mystery to me, why such a vital life saving service get no help from the powers that be. These guys are out there saving lives every day while they’re out their putting up more lampposts and re – tarmacing Wroxham Road again… Ooops,I nearly slipped off my sop box there – enough of that, I don’t want to get into all that really – all I’m saying is that this cause is so important, it is close to many of us, I know at lease two people who wouldn’t be here had it not been for the Air Ambulance. It is you guys that keep the chopper in the air. We had a brilliant day and raised some good money….this is what we raised and how – check it out…

DOOR MONEY £910.13
TOMBOLA £381.20
TUB ON BAR 1 : £58.61
TUB ON BAR 2: £22.36
TOTAL RAISED: £1659.48

WELL DONE EVERYONE!!!  – a great amount of dosh 🙂  We would like to say a massive THANKYOU to the bands – ‘Mismatch’,  ‘Nina Baker’, ‘Gameplan’, ‘Riot on the 3rd Floor’, Firewire’, ‘The Claire Barker Band’, ‘Pandemonium’ , ‘The Burning Crows’, ‘Aftershock’ and ‘Floating Greyhounds’ you guys all gave up your bank holiday and came to play for free, we appreciate it so much.  We also have to say thankyou for all of you that helped out on the day, Emma Hart  – for providing some amazing works of art on many faces throughout the day, Gerry – for helping on the door, John 2pints, Pip & Clare for helping with the bar and glasses and everyone who pitched in to help us out. Thanks to you all for coming, without your support we couldn’t make these days so successful, let alone raise any money for charity. Now we look forward to the BIG ONE! yes folks – BRICKFEST 2011 is just around the corner, we have a little over two months to finish organising things, with three stages and 39 bands it takes a little more effort. We can’t wait tho – it’s going to be awesome!

And now for something completely different – I know I go on about it quite a bit but I want to do it again. Yes! I’m going to tell you again about our Acoustic nights! They are masters of disguise and change every week, no Wednesday is ever the same.  We have a few regular players that turn up to showcase their new material but every week we are meeting new people and hearing new artistes on our stage. It’s incredible, who knew we had such talented songwriters in the city?  When people mention The Brickmakers, you often hear us associated with heavy rock and metal. I won’t deny that it dominates the majority of the genres here but we do have other types of music too (for example – there is a Ska & Reggae night this Friday with THE STYLATONES! and then a pop/soul night with EMMA HALL on Saturday). If you prefer a more chilled approach to live music then you really should get down here on a Wednesday night. Last week we had no less than 14 singer/songwriters get up and play 3 of their best songs. It’s a fantastic night and is so totally different from any other night at The Brickies, it makes a refreshing change.   From the artist’s point a view it’s a brilliant way to promote yourself and get new fans, you can now get some fantastic photo’s taken for free too – We have been working closely with Dan Gavrovski from the awesome
‘Bananafudge Studios in Wymondham. He has kindly offered to come down every Wednesday night and photoblog our Acoustic Open Mic sessions. We started a couple of weeks ago and so far the photos have been amazing.  Knowing how hard and expensive decent photos can be, Dan offered his time to try to help local musicians promote themselves.  Anyone who performed and who is featured can take the photo’s and use them as they wish all we ask is that you please credit Banana Fudge Studios . Check out Dan’s Acoustic night galleries here…

Right, that’s it for now folks, I have to get a move on – we’ve got The Big Music Quiz this Sunday and I haven’t even started it yet!! ooops!

Wind me up and watch me go!

Have a great week guys – see you soon 🙂

Oh My God that was amazing….what a brilliant day we had. The sun was shining and the bands were on form, and so were you lot! We had 12 awesome hours and each one rocked in aid of such a worthy cause.

During the course of the day, with your help we managed to raise a total amount of £1856.64

With two great Cancer charities in mind we are donating £1000 to Breast Cancer Research. The good news here is that the wonderful team at Barclays Bank have agreed to match us pound for pound. So they will also be donating £1000 to Breast Cancer Research .

Our second charity is chosen in honour of Jason Leech, a very dear friend and inspiration to us all. Two of his friends are tackling the 400km bike ride through Kenya, over the course of 5days in aid of Breast Cancer Care. We are going to donate the rest of the money to the cause in his name. You can read more about the girls cycle ride across Kenya by visiting their JustGiving pages here.

Check out the breakdown below to see exactly how the money was raised!

Right folks, it’s getting on for 3am and my ability to type is dwindling so I am going to say goodnight now. Thanks again for everything, your support and friendship is overwhelming.

With love –

Charley, Pam, Em and the whole Brickies team!!! xxxxx

Well it’s quite a chilled out Easter Sunday so far. I’m sitting here at the sound desk listening to the marvellous Lee Vasey band. It’s Claire’s last session with them today, she’s heading out on her own with her own band and embarking on a solo career. We wish her all the very best, I have to say we are definitely gonna miss her on Sundays but watch this space guys, we have dates booked with her band so come and check them out, Claire is one of the most talented voices in the city right now!   Check out Claire Barker’s Website!

It’s been a great weekend for gigs, classic rockers kept us shaking on friday night and then I was in stage last night with Pure Passion, I was a little worried it might have been quiet what with the bank holiday but I needn’t have worried, we were jam packed and we had a brilliant gig, both from a pub point of view and personally – I had a great night.

Right now, we’re all looking forward to tomorrow. It’s our first charity bash of the year and it’s in aid of Breast Cancer charities. We’ve got 10 bands on from
Midday including, Mr Pink, Riot on the Third Floor, Sugar Rush, Gameplan, The Burning Crows, Pout at The Devil, Mucked Up Funkies, The Collective and more. We’ve also got bouncy castle and face painting for kids of all ages, yes- I reckon I might have a go too!! We have a massive tombola with loads of cool prizes including a digital video recorder and a Westfield Stratocaster guitar up for grabs donated by Norfolk Guitar And Bass Centre! It’s gonna be hot, it’s gonna be great fun. Come on over and help us to raise some big money for this worthy cause that means so much to us all! We kick off at 12 midday and it will only cost ya £2 to get in! See you there…

Right that’s it folks, have a fantastic Easter break!

Hey everyone 🙂 I know it’s been a while since my last blog, things have just been completely mental on both a professional level and a personal level.  I’m juggling standing on one leg at the moment and I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve been struggling keeping up to my deadlines. It’s a full time job running a busy venue let alone playing in a band , adding a wedding to organise and caring for poorly grandparents to the mix. However, we are still here, The Brickies is thriving and still rockin’ in a scary economic climate and we are SO ready to party. YES! it is that time of year again where we are going to celebrate another fantastic year here at ‘The Brickmakers’. Mum, Em and I took over in April 2003 and it’s been an epic journey from there to here… We’ve made alot of wonderful friends on the way, and seen some awesome bands. With the future of pubs swinging uncertainly in the hands of fate we are constantly amazed at the amount of love and support we get from you guys, it is definately you and of course the bands that keep us going every day. So with a view to rockin’ away the next eight years we are inviting YOU ALL to get your butts down here tomorrow night (SAT 16th APRIL) for our 8th birthday party. Its FREE ENTRY and it’s going to be mental. There is a surprise band on, that kind of means that none of you will know who is playing until they strike that first chord. I have to say, the last month has kept us smiling as you all keep trying to guess who the band is. I even got asked in TESCOS who the birthday band was… yes it nearly caught me out lol. So, make sure you get down here early as Annie will be on the door counting you in and when we’re full I’m afraid you’ll be in a queue.  We’re not giving away any clues other thatn 1) it’s a band that we’ve never had before and 2) They have been around since late 70’s spanning all decades to now!  – That’s it, thats all youre getting.  If you want to know, we’ll see you here for a beer tomorrow night from 8.30pm.  We’ll be down the front ready to dance so we’ll see you there!  – If you want a little giggle, check out some of the piccies below!

As for tonight, if you feel like getting warmed up for the birthday bash, awesome local rockers FIREWIRE will be bringing us a set of modern and classic rock complete with lasar show starting around 9pm. We look forward to seeing you.

Right thats short and sweet I know, but as I said im sooooo behind on deadlines, my newsletter should have been sent off two days ago, I only started it this morning so I better get some ABBA on and get a shifty!!!

Yes, I’ve just recovered from my birthday weekend and what a weekend it was.  I spent two fantastic days surrounded by my family, friends and customers in a place I am very proud to call home. Yes of course I’m talking about ‘The Brickies’. On Saturday night just gone we had the awesome ‘MAETLOAF’, an exceptional tribute to the force that is MEATLOAF. Without going on about it too much I have to say that these guys are in my humble opinion one of the best tributes I have ever seen.  I saw Meatloaf a couple of years ago and to be completely honest I came away from the gig feeling empty and disappointed.  Maetloaf were just incredible, Craig (Mr.Loaf) is everything and more than the real thing, he rises to the challenge and exceeds all expectations. His vocals and stamina are exceptional.  The girls, Mel and Jodey are equally as competent with powerful, soulful vocals.  The Band themselves as a whole create a presence on stage fuelled by passion and charisma. I couldn’t have had a better birthday and am still on a high from the gig.  It’s always the sign of a great band when they leave you wanting more and the time went way too quickly. They wont be back until next year now, we’ve booked them in for another exciting birthday night next Feb. In the meantime, check them out and friend them on Facebook for more info.  Thanks to all of you guys that sent me cards, fuelled me with alcohol and helped me to celebrate… I am another year older but I’m sure I remain as unwise as I have always been lol.

So what has been happening in the world of ‘The Brickies’??? well, I know it’s been a few weekes since I last wrote, I have been kind of letting the new website settle in for the month and fixing last-minute bugs, it seems to be holding it’s own really well. We are so chuffed with how it’s going and the positive feedback we have had concerning it. The site itself has had in the month of February 1329 visits and 4796 page views. That’s a huge number and we are very excited by it. It’s good to see that it’s actually being used, I mean, I knew people would pop on and have a look but I wasn’t quite prepared for that response – it’s awesome! The next step as far as the website goes is to cater for all those with mobile devices. The website is exciting, flashy and new but it is not as present accessible to those with Iphones, Ipads and other mobiles with web capabilities. Luckily for us, we have the amazing Ben, he’s helping us to create an App-like version of the site which will work happily on all your mobile devices. It won’t have such a vast amount of content as the website but it will have a gig guide for the month, a in depth guide of what is coming up that week. It’s basically all you need for The Brickies on-the-go!  So that’s all pretty exciting stuff. I’ve also been looking into the possibilities of podcasting gigs, blogs and internet radio – just because I like to keep on the go and keep new things happening all the time here at ‘The Brickies’. I have loads of ideas for new and exciting additions to our offerings, you guys will just have to watch this space.  I just can’t sit still too long lol.

This week is cool, the new newsletters are out, you can view it online here or pop in and pick a paper one up for more info on whats happening. This weeks hot happening is THE SEX PISTOLS EXPERIENCE this thursday night. Get in early and you’ll get in cheaper.  Also lined up for me this week is some more maintenance on the PA system and lighting rig. We spent a night last week going through the monitors and mending thingies, replacing drivers fuses and bulbs. I ordered new parts and am now waiting so I can fix the rest….everything seems to give up at the same time, lol.

Right, I think I’m supposed to be cleaning a loo somewhere so I had better go and do it  ( I wonder if I can do that with my soldering Iron and a phillips…..)

Laters folks

Yep….that’s the one lol… I’m very pleased and want to share it with you all. The new website has been live since 28th Jan, that’s just over two weeks, in that time we have been visited by 850 people and had 2204 page views. I’m gobsmacked by the response and also by the amount of people who use our site. Don’t get me wrong, I know that it’s a great way to check out the gig guide and news etc but WOW! – that’s a lot of people. If you haven’t checked it out yet and want to see what all the fuss is about then head on over to our new site at www.thebrickmakers.com

As for everything else since the launch, well its been a great couple of weeks, I love February, obviously being the month of Lurrrrve with Valentines day and also because its my birthday at the end of the month. We have a brilliant tribute band – ‘Maetloaf and his band the Never Neverland Express’ booked in for my birthday weekend, that means a lot of fun and a brilliant band. We booked these guys for Brickies birthday party two years ago and they blew everyone away. I mean, I have seen Meatloaf in concert and this guy has more meat than the real thing… I definitely think he would give the actual Meatloaf a run for his money. The band and the girl singers also make it an experience not to be missed. It’s on the 26th Feb by the way and if you’re free  please come on over and have a pint with me, I van guarantee I wont be working that night… I’ll be down the front with you guys singing my head off lol.

We had the new Floyd tribute band in last weekend, now this one I would be very interested to hear your comments on if you have a sec.  For the last 7 years we have been lucky enough to have dates with the awesome ‘JUST FLOYD’, this week we tried out the local Floyd tribute ‘PURE FLOYD’. It was a brilliant night and their set was perfect, it’s a tough call to say which one I prefer personally as I feel that both ands have really good points. This new band had the edge as to be completely honest, it was the female backing singers that made the night for me. Having said that,  if ‘JUST FLOYD’ had the female backing singers too, they would also be complete.  I find it quite vital with a Floyd tribute, their backing vocals are so strong both on recordings and in a live situation, if you are going to go out and try to imitate a band of that stature, it’s got to be done right. ‘PURE FLOYD’ have got as close as I’ve seen any tribute get on the local pub circuit.  We would definitely welcome any comments on this one, if you were here for the gig please let us know what you thought of them.  We have a date with ‘JUST FLOYD’ later in the year, it will be good to compare notes.

This weekend is looking exciting as we have ‘Worlds Apart’ here on Friday night, these guys have been on the Norwich Music Scene for as long as I can remember and still manage to pack the place, mind you with a set like theirs it’s not surprising really. Saturday night is going to be just as busy, I’m playing with ‘Pure Passion’ and we have the awesome ‘She Sez’ playing with us too so it’s going to be awesome. I so love playing to a home crowd, it’s like slipping on a pair of comfy PJ’s. Can’t wait!

Well I think that’s enough random rambling for tonight…I can hear my bed calling… Don’t forget to leave us your comments guys and also check out our shiny new website if you haven’t already!!!

Keep Rockin’

Yes folks, don’t know about you guys but it is definitely the moment I have been waiting for. Finally, at last, the WEBSITE is finished and live www.thebrickmakers.com   It is all flash so whilst it looks very sexy on desktops and laptops, it sadly is not compatible with mobile devices. Never fear tho, there is a link to take non-flash users through to our myspace, this is ONLY TEMPORARY. You mobile users will have a dedicated site up there within the week so be patient….it’s coming! For now, the myspace will give you all the gig dates you need.  I have to say, I’m really chuffed with the site,  I love the feel of it, however we are wholly relying on you guys to give us some feedback. Whilst we want it to be fresh and sexy we also want it to be user friendly and full of information that you need. So, for that reason I’m asking you wonderful Brickies people to leave me comments, good and bad and constructive please… tell me what you think of the site, any ways it can be improved etc…

Tonight on our stage we have a date with Rhythm and Blues kings ‘FOURPLAY’ and then tomorrow things get a little heavier with ‘TO THE LAST’, expect songs from the likes of Judas Priest, Metallica and Iron Maiden…

Right I’m going to let you all go and investigate now and I’m going to drink lots of coffee…

Have a great weekend folks and thanks in anticipation for all your input…

Mini blog – late night!

Posted: January 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

Just a quickie guys.. I really just wanted to say hi and let you all know that although all has been quiet here on the blog front, I haven’t forgotten you all! As well as the day to day running of the pub and venue over the last week I have been working my butt off to try and get this website up and live. I am falling victim to my own perfectionism and creativity as I can’t help but make extra work for myself. I got it into my head that it would be a good idea to have, on the new site a section for bands. A place where you can all go and read about each band that plays here. I figured it would help you all when you’re deciding on your nights out. At the same time
It will help promote the bands involved by embedding sounds, video and even their own twitter feeds if they have them. It’s a great idea in theory, actually finding suitable promotional material on some bands is proving to be a nightmare. I am amazed that in this day and age there are still some bands that don’t have a website or even a presence on myspace or facebook. Come on guys..you can’t afford not to! Norwich itself has thousands of bands all trying to get gigs, trying to make themselves heard… It’s vital that bands make use of all the technology available to them… When venue owners like me sit down to advertise gigs we need at least a photo, a web address or myspace, a small paragraph would be nice.. How are we supposed to advertise bands if they don’t advertise themselves? Lol sorry, went off on or for a mo there didn’t I? Yes, so, as I was saying, researching bands for the right material to include is taking a little while. I’m hoping to have everything completed and live for the end of the week. Then, I need your help! I’m expecting a few teething problems – it happens but I am kind of relying on you to give me some feedback on the site, whether it’s easy to use, does it load up content quick enough? if you can find everything you need etc, that kind of thing..every comment will be appreciated, good and bad.. It needs to be user friendly and I know I sometimes get caught up in making things look pretty and forgetting basic needs…

I’ll give you all a shout when it’s live – watch this space!

Night folks

Posted: January 11, 2011 in Just another Day...

Yep, of you hadn’t guessed it from the heading, I am writing this in bed lol.  I’ve had a night off tonight (it does happen now and then) and I have spent some time with friends, mainly watching comedy on TV and laughing lots and eating chinese food. It’s good to do ‘normal’ stuff now ant then, it becomes very easy to get a little lost in here sometimes. When our working days are as long as they are, sometimes one day rolls into the next and you can easily forget what day it is and what band was on last night, I know it sounds ridiculous but it is a fact.  Ask me on a Monday morning what bands were playing the weekend just passed and you will definitely get a blank Charley stare. That is in no way meant as any disrespect to our bands, it’s just that when that day starts I’ve already left yesterday, wading through today and preparing for tomorrow. Sometimes, you’ve just got to stop and breathe. I did a bit of that tonight and I must say it did me the world of good, it isn’t helping me to sleep though – mind you, it’s still relatively early…

…well for me anyway. I am a nightmare when it comes to sleeping – it started as a kid, ask mum – she’ll tell you. I didn’t sleep through the night until I was over 5 years old, she used to have to put me int he car and drive me around the ring road to get me to drop off. (Probably the reason I sleep better whilst travelling in my adult life…) Most of my professional life has been spent working night hours, whether it is in the band, here at the pub or in my previous job as a residential social worker, most of the jobs I have worked have involved working nights. It’s crazy, I’m not really sure of the reasons but I will fight sleep until I really cannot stay awake any more, it’s a hard habit to break. It’s only 1.38am so I think I will take the time to update some gig listings etc..

Normally when I blog I run on about the day I have planned out, the jobs and various tasks I have to do in that day. It’s strange doing it this way when my main task ahead is shutting my eyes and grabbing some sleep…can it really be that hard?  I think a lot of the problem I’m having at the moment is idea creation… I’ve had a few ideas for some new nights in the pub and I make the mistake of thinking about them just before I try to sleep…DOH! It’s obviously because in the busyness of the day you get wrapped up in what you are doing and at the end of the day when you wind down that’s when it starts…. what about this? and what if we do this? it all pops into my head at the same time. Maybe writing all this down will empty my brain and I’ll be able to get sleepy… stranger things have happened.

Tomorrow I have to finish the newsletter for February and send it off for print deadline. That could be easier said than done as I have an acupuncture session in the middle of the day which kind of sends me a little dozy for a couple of hours, it’s the best feeling, but it does kind of rule out any heavy machinery operation… so I will not be using the stapler or hole punch until way after 4pm tomorrow! If you are in tom afternoon and witness any piece of office equipment in my hands please call for assistance, I could be armed and loosely dangerous lol.

Right, folks…I’m going to go now and try to think of blue skies and not work, ideas, or Pavlova of any kind!!!

mmmmm cheesecake!
